Far beneath my feet, emerges a friend so alien, so brief in its existence, it seems born from a dream or a long-forgotten myth. This is Phallus sp., one of the strange members of the stinkhorn fungi family, and like other natural wonders, its purpose is as peculiar as its beauty.
At a glance, it looks like a creature from another world: a hollow white stalk growing from the forest floor, topped with a conical or bell-shaped cap covered in a brown slimy layer known as gleba. This foul-smelling substance, reminiscent of rotting flesh, acts as bait to attract flies and carrion-eating insects. When they land and feed, spores stick to their bodies and are carried off, spreading them throughout the forest.
Perhaps the most eye-catching feature is its delicate lace-like veil, or indusium; a thin and artistic “skirt” that hangs beneath the main cap, like a bridal gown from the cosmos. Pale white or yellowish in colour, it nearly touches the ground. Whether it plays a role in attracting insects or is simply an evolutionary byproduct, its beauty still holds meaning in this brief, dramatic display of life.
This friend, which appears only once in a while, is a fleeting marvel of the forest. It grows rapidly from an underground, egg-like structure, then quickly wilts and disappears. To the indigenous people, it is more than just a curiosity; it serves as a marker of time. If the “veiled lady” still stands tall, morning is still young; if it has wilted, the day has passed. It reflects that even within the veiled world of the forest, a lifeform this small still carries stories to tell.
