Baccaurea parviflora

Fun Facts:

  • The Setambun is a unique, smaller rainforest tree growing up to 15 meters tall with beautiful, leathery leaves.
  • Unlike most trees, its flowers and fruits grow in long strings directly on the lower trunk and right at the base of the tree.
  • When its strings of fruit ripen, they shift into a vibrant dark red or purplish-black color.
  • The fleshy fruit pulp inside offers a deliciously sharp, sour taste that makes it a favorite food source for forest birds.

Where Can You Find It?

  • It thrives happily under the shade of primary and secondary tropical rainforests in Peninsular Malaysia.
  • Look closely at the very bottom of the tree trunks along the trail—you might spot its low-hanging strings of fruit.
  • Its presence is a fantastic indicator of a healthy, mature forest ecosystem that supports local wildlife.
