Endospermum diadenum

Plants in the Pulai

Fun Facts:

  • The tree gets its unique local name “Sesendok” because its broad, rounded leaves cup slightly at the base, looking like a traditional spoon (sendok).
  • It is a fast-growing pioneer tree species that helps the forest naturally regenerate by quickly shading open spaces.
  • The wood is prized in Malaysia as a premium Light Hardwood, famously used to manufacture high-quality wooden toys, matchsticks, and drawing boards.
  • At the base of each leaf blade, there are two tiny glands that secrete sweet fluid to attract helpful ants that protect the tree.

Where Can You Find It?

  • It occurs commonly in secondary forests, disturbed areas, and lowland plains across Peninsular Malaysia.
  • Keep an eye out on the mid-to-upper canopy levels along the Pulai Trail to spot its characteristic spoon-shaped foliage.
  • Watch how its light-colored bark stands out beautifully among the darker trunks of the surrounding jungle.
